So Many Republican Hypocrites, So Little Time

July 25, 2008 | SEND TO A FRIEND | GET EARLY NOTICE OF THE HOTW

Larry Craig

Welcome back to the BuzzFlash GOP Hypocrite of the Week.

For his support of the unpopular and largely failed "don't ask, don't tell" military policy, we award Sen. Larry "Wide Stance" Craig (R-ID) this week's GOP Hypocrite of the Week award.

"Don't ask, don't tell" has fallen out of favor with almost everyone in the country. Even conservatives who cringe at the idea of allowing gays in the military admit that the policy is a bad one. Furthermore, a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll reveals that 75 percent of Americans want gays to be able to serve openly in the military.

Yet the military policy that is responsible for ditching 12,000 soldiers for no reason other than their sexual orientation still has one friend. And who could possibly understand better the 15-year old closeting mechanism than a lawmaker who denies his latent homosexuality at every opportunity?

Little more than one year ago, Craig was arrested and pled guilty to disorderly conduct for soliciting sex from a male police officer in a men's bathroom at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

But Craig has been fighting rumors about his sexual orientation since 1967. The Idaho Statesman interviewed several men who say they have been solicited by or have engaged in sexual acts with the Senator. Also, Craig preemptively denied involvement in a 1982 gay sex scandal involving underage Congressional pages.

Craig still says: "I am not gay, I never have been gay."

Apparently "don't ask, don't tell" doesn't apply to non-verbal communication such as foot tapping in a public restroom. Or maybe Craig thinks "don't ask, don't tell" should be applied to the news media. Don't ask me if I'm gay, and don't tell people I might be gay, we imagine Craig saying to the Idaho Statesman.

"Jiminy God," just don't say it out loud! And Craig hasn't. He still stands behind his marriage, saying he's straight as an arrow, and just as narrow. And for that, Craig has earned our recognition as a true GOP hypocrite.

Remember our motto: So many Republican hypocrites, so little time.

Catch up with you soon.
