So Many Republican Hypocrites, So Little Time

George W. Bush

Welcome back to the Buzzflash GOP Hypocrite of the Week.

It may be the fifth anniversary of Bush's infamous codpiece "Mission Unaccomplished" speech, and we should be simmering with anger at how a war that was supposed to end in weeks or months has dragged on longer than WWII.

But we must say, as we close out the last year of the Bush Administration nightmare, there are moments when we wax nostalgic that we won't have George -- in his Full Moronic Monty -- to kick around anymore.

This past week at a news conference, Bush answered a question about the deteriorating conditions in Afghanistan, considering the resurgence of the Taliban and the assassination attempt on President Karzai. Bush responded:

RADDATZ: Are we winning in Afghanistan?

BUSH: I think we're making progress in Afghanistan […]

RADDATZ: But do you think we're winning? Do you think we're winning?

BUSH: I do, I think we're making good progress. I do, yes.
But in an earlier "exclusive interview" with the same ABC reporter, Bush had conceded that he had claimed we were "winning" in Iraq, when we weren't, because he didn't want to upset the morale of our GIs:
RADDATZ: All during that period [in 2006] -- April, May, June, July -- when things were really going downhill, people were talking about there being civil war.

BUSH: Yes.

RADDATZ: You were saying, 'We're winning. We have a plan for victory. We are winning,' up through October.

BUSH: Well, there was -- I also recognized -- I think if you'd go through the -- kind of fully analyze my statements, I was also saying, "The fighting is very tough, it's -- you know, the extremism is unacceptable. The murder is unacceptable." And you know, it's very important to be realistic.

RADDATZ: But the overall thing -- when you say, "We're winning," you know what the American people hear. You know how that will play.

BUSH: Well, yes. I think we -- and I wanted -- that's as much trying to bolster the spirits of the people in the field as well as -- look, you can't have the commander in chief say to a bunch of kids who are sacrificing either, "It's not worth it," or, "You're losing." I mean, what does that do for morale?
So Bush essentially lied to our soldiers in order to keep them believing that they were "winning" a war that they were losing because of years of lies and mismanagement coming directly from Bush and Cheney.

Now people died as a result of these lies and the Bush-Cheney malfeasance.

That, my friends, is some hypocrisy. It's also criminal neglect.

No, in reality, we will celebrate the moment that we don't have Bush to kick around anymore -- as long as John McCain doesn't replace him.

The days are running out for us to once again honor George W. Bush with the dubious distinction of being named the BuzzFlash GOP Hypocrite of the Week.

Remember our motto: So many Republican hypocrites, so little time.

Catch up with you soon.
